As a registered nurse, I feel that I have played a critical role in providing the necessary care to my patients. I have worked as an RN for 18 years, and I have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Both competencies have provided the knowledge and skills to offer adequate care to patients. However, I feel prepared to pursue advanced education to have more career options and opportunities to work as a registered nurse. I would not only pursue a master’s program but also work as a family nurse practitioner to advance my caring role.
I choose to advance my career because I truly care about others as well as many benefits attached to the master’s program and working as a family nurse practitioner. I will be able to work closely with nurses and provide direct care. Working as a nurse is respectable, but not enough for a person who wants to provide quality patient-centred care (DiCenso, Guyatt, & Ciliska, 2014). I want to understand the problems that patients present and work with physicians to design and implement effective interventions to address them.
I want to pursue a Masters in Family Nurse Practitioner because it will add meaning to my life as a nurse. I know that I have been a competent nurse, but my current educational achievement is limited in terms of the role I can play to help my patients and what I can earn from my profession. Therefore, the program will provide an opportunity to develop myself and as an opportunity to serve and care for more patients within and outside my community (Billings & Halstead, 2015). After the program, I will have a chance to make a real impact on people, the community, and the healthcare system.
