I found William Kentridge’s work to be the most compelling because he’s able to express his ideas into his drawings. He uses his work as a way to tell a story and getting a meaning across to the viewers, and in Felix in Exile, he constructs the film as an act against apartheid.

I found Kristen Leopore’s work to be very compelling and original. Not only was a lot of working put into the process of creating the films, the ideas and themes behind them to be very thought-provoking and interesting. Sweet Dreams was a short film about a cupcake going to the land of vegetables, in which he brought back carrot seeds and revolutionized the sugar land’s culture. Move Mountain showed the journey of a sick person to the top of the mountain in order to find a cure, only to discover that they were cured, and never needed it in the first place. I believe that Sweet Dreams is a lesson about accepting new things and learning to look at things from a different perspective, whereas Move Mountain explores our own struggles and motivations to overcome an obstacle.

The Brothers Quay’s Street of Crocodiles (1986)

The artists I find most intriguing and compelling are The Brothers Quay. The two brothers have made a considerable contribution to animation since the 1970s, working together to entertain their audience. They are among artists who have earned a name for themselves by creating animated puppets. One of their animated films that I find most exciting is the Street of Crocodiles created in 1986. I find it interesting that twin brothers can work together to produce exciting films. One of their most enjoyable animated films is Street of Crocodiles (1986), which is features a puppet recently freed from strings. It is one of their aminations that portrays their artists’ mysterious visual, literary, cinematic musical and philosophical influence. The film also reveals the brothers’ utterly unique sensibility and sense of humor.

The film attracts the attention of the viewer through hypnotic control of music, camera, décor, and movement. In the process, the film evokes fascinating and half-remembered dreams. For example, in the Street of Crocodiles, the recently freed puppet works in a box of curios exploring an unused and lonely commercial space. It conveys an interesting turn of events, that is, the freed puppet who appears unable to exist in the world of others and prefers to find a desolate place. Another aspect of the film that I find fascinating is the ability of the Brothers Quay to create such an interesting adaptation of Bruno Schulz’s book by the same name. They create for the audience a different and exciting channel to enjoy the story. They use an abundance of spooky charm to portray a dark underworld that entraps the emaciated puppet.
