Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Understand the connection between the body and the mind
- Comprehend the importance of considering the person holistically (as a system comprising of parts that should work together)
- Understand the role of mindful exercises to achieve holistic healing.
- Understand controversies surrounding the view of the body as a system of parts that work together in harmony.
- Discuss the systematic view of the body concerning diseases, such as cancer and menstruation.
Assumed Prior Knowledge:
Students have already studied the concept of systems thinking outside nursing and health care, such as in management and information technology subjects. For instance, they understand how a machine or information system comprises different parts that work together to achieve the objectives of the whole system. They will apply the same knowledge in the holistic view of the human body.
Content Outline:
- Introduction to the conflict between war and harmony
- Discussion of systems thinking outside healthcare
- Analysis of systems thinking within health care
- Holistic biology
- Blood feuds
- Conclusion
Teaching/Learning Activities:
- Classroom discussion
- Experience with mindful activities
- PowerPoint presentations
- Question and answer
Resources:
The class text to access chapter 7, whiteboard pens, PowerPoint presentation & memory stick; 2 lesson plan proformas per person; 1 worksheet; Copy of PowerPoint as a handout;
Computer & projector.
Critical Thinking Focus:
Assess the systems view of the human body and the role it plays in improving holistic healing.
Evaluate the application of holistic biology to understand medical conditions, such as cancer.
Identify possible disconnects in the systematic view of the body as a whole comprising of parts that work together in harmony.
Group Activity
- Group discussion using a handout regarding the systems view outside nursing and healthcare.
- A discussion of the application of systems thinking in nursing and healthcare.
- A discussion of the disconnect in systems thinking in understanding the human body.
- A discussion to answer the questions before the instructor gives correct answers.
Question and Answer Session
- What do you understand about the concept of the wholeness of the mind and body?
Answer: The idea focuses on coordinated work of the mind and the body to achieve holistic healing (p. 112).
- What is your understanding of systems thinking?
Answer: A system containing various parts that work together to achieve results (p 117)
- What is a biological system?
Answer: It is a system that comprises various parts (macroscopic and microscopic), which collaborate for the good of the whole structure (p. 119).
- What is one example of the disconnect between the holistic idea of the body?
Answer: The idea fails to explain some processes in the body, such as the development of cancer, which involves an uncontrollable division of cells that leads to their demise (p. 125).
- What is the conflict and harmony between the human endometrium and the human embryo/placental combination?
Answer: It involves conflict between various cells of the body as a normal biological process (p. 134). An example includes another war between conflict and harmony within the human body.
Reading Requirements:
Chapter 7: The War Between Conflict & Harmony
In addition to the book, the instructor will identify other relevant resources to include in the lesson.
