The Anatomy of COVID-19
COVID-19 is a novel strain of coronavirus, identified for the first time towards the end of 2019 in China. COVID-19 is a pneumonia-like disease, which is highly infectious. SARS-CoV-2 is the new coronavirus that causes the disease and is has the same anatomy as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus. The CoVs is a major microorganism responsible for manu respiratory infections in many animal species, including humans (Paul, 2020). Coronaviruses have a high replication rate, explaining the fast rate by which they are being transferred. Considering its high infection rate across the world due to interconnectedness across the world, people have to take necessary precautions to prevent it, such as regular hand sanitizing, proper washing of hands, and wearing mask to prevent the droplets from being transferred from one person to another (World Health Organization, 2020). The precautions are necessary to prevent individual transmission and further spreading of the disease.
While there are four main categories of coronavirus, only α & β coronaviruses can infect mammals/humans. Bats and rodents, as per genomic characterization, are the main sources of the coronavirus that infects humans. The typical generic coronavirus genome is one strand with 32-kilobases long RNA (Paul, 2020). The virus also mutates and changes at a very high rate, leading to challenges in diagnosis and vaccine development. As a result, the disease has spread considerable high across the world, creating challenges for different categories of individuals, such as pregnant women and people with pre-existing conditions. Pregnant women and people with pre-existing conditions fear for their health because of the uncertainty related to access to medical support or the effect of the virus on their health and that of their unborn babies.
Physiology of COVID-19
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has serious effects on human health, healthcare systems and the international economy. Acute respiratory failure is the main cause of mortality from COVID-19, with a high number of infected individuals showing cardiovascular problems, such as cardiac arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, and vascular thrombosis. The consequences of COVID-19 are complicated, creating uncertainty among people with pre-existing conditions. After all, the disease affects multiple physiological systems in the human body. Current research has revealed that elderly people and individuals with pre-existing conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and hypertension have a higher incidence of mortality from the disease. Being on an ACE inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) is probably the primary reason for the high susceptibility to the viral infection among the elderly and people with underlying conditions (Arcuri, 2020). Therefore, as part of the precaution for such at-risk population, it is necessary to remain on antihypertensive medications to control hypertension.
The effect of COVID-19 on pregnant women remains uncertain and research is underway to establish how changes in the pregnant woman’s body affect the possibility of the infection and how the infection might affect a pregnant individual. Regardless, anxiety is common among the women since they fear for their lives and for their unborn babies. Physiological, anatomical and immunological changes in pregnant women might increase their vulnerability. Adaptive immune state and cell-mediated immunity suppression, as well as changes in maternal cardiovascular and respiratory systems is other risk factors (Schwartz, 2020). However, research is underway to establish the actual impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women. Research on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 is a developing field since a lot needs to be studied to understand the actual anatomy and physiology of the new coronavirus.
