Theory- The conflict theory was used as the primary sociological theory to decipher the issue of homelessness facing Bruce. The conflict theory acknowledges the presence of conflict in society due to competition for limited resources. In this case, conflict theory made sense of Bruce’s current state; capitalism created two classes of people, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Bruce belonged to the proletariat class, whose only economic value was labor power.

I held a face-to-face conversation with Bruce in the agency offices after a referral from a well-wisher. The interview revolved mainly around the client’s challenges, what he wished to achieve, and abilities he could leverage to secure employment. The client was thrilled by my feedback to refer him to temporary housing as I searched for employment opportunities that matched his abilities. His tone was also calm, but he seemed to have language and communication difficulties. Bruce also responded better to close-ended questions because they were straightforward. While Bruce nodded most of the time, showing that he was listening, he was distracted for a large portion of the interview. Nevertheless, he was receptive to my feedback and committed to working hard if he secured a job in the city. | I was empathetic toward my client throughout the session. I felt the session went fine because all the essential information was obtained regardless of the communication issues experienced. However, I could have done better by seeking information about the client’s close friends and family who could offer emotional assistance as the client transitioned from the streets to a temporary shelter. For this reason, I intend to make this a priority question the next time I interact with the client. |

Tools: The primary tools used during the interaction were communication and professionalism. Communication was essential for gaining information about the client’s current state and guiding my decision on the best approach to solve his issue. Professionalism and professional support also came into play during my interaction with Bruce. These tools guided me to assess the client’s issue and identify available support systems that he could utilize to elevate his current situation. For example, after our interview, I researched and referred the client to temporary housing and promised to assist him in his employment search to enable him to meet his long-term needs.

Skills- Communication, active listening, and counseling were among the skills used during the interview with the client. Communication skills, verbal and non-verbal, proved effective because of the client’s poor language skills, which may have been affected by his educational background. Active listening skills also helped me objectively listen to the client, clarify issues I could not understand, and make informed decisions on the most suitable approach to handle their shelter and employment problem.
