Lab | Physics homework help

Please label each answer with the appropriate number corresponding to the problem number below and press “return” after each answer to leave a blank line between values to make your thoughts more readable.

Before answering the questions below, please read the lab handout “Physics 161 Lab 1” and “Statistics Handout.”

1) Explain the mathematical steps required to calculate the uncertainty of the calculated value of density.

2) What was the uncertainty of your calculated value of density using ruler measurements?

3) What was the uncertainty of your calculated value of density using caliper measurements?

4) Which dimension measurement method worked better? Did your prediction for the preliminary survey 1) hold true?

5) If you were given a larger, similarly shaped sample of the same metal, do you think your uncertainty on its measured density would be greater than, less than, or equal to the uncertainty on your sample? Why?

6) When you look at the density data set compiled from all the students from the preliminary survey number 5), you will notice that some of the density values do not agree very well. This is because not everybody had the same type of metal. Do an internet search for metal densities in units of grams per cubic centimeter, what type of metal do you think was in your lab kit?

7) Look at the density data for the “ruler method” and do your best to separate these numbers into two groups (call one “Group A” and the other “Group B”) using the statistics handout find the Difference Significance between the two groups of density data.

8) Now look at the density data for the “caliper method” and do your best to separate these numbers into two groups (use the same names as the ones for the ruler method) using the statistics handout find the Difference Significance between the two groups of density data.

9) If you wanted to make an argument to claim that the data set actually contained density values from two different type of metal, you would want a large DS value to back up your claim. Which method, ‘ruler’ or ‘caliper’ does this for you?

 5) What is the density of your metal cube using the ruler measurements?

Density= 8.8/1

Density= 8.8  g/cm^3 an uncertainty +/-1mm

6) What is the density of your metal cube using the caliper measurements

density=  8.8/ 1.124864

density= 7.823167956 g/cm^3 uncertainty of +/- 0.02mm
