Engineering students have consistently faced numerous challenges of merging both the technical and writing assignments comfortably. Notably, students who have better writing skills perform better than their counterparts in engineering courses. Regardless of the field of study, working on the writing skills gives an individual a better opportunity of having a firm academic foundation. In college, individuals are faced with great expectations of delivering quality and highly researched studies. Therefore, a student has to learn how to plan their study and manage time efficiently to succeed in their course work. Therefore, the justification for this study is to provide a persuasive discussion that will help engineering students understand the fundamental aspects that positively contribute to successful writing in their college classes.
Active learning is the most important factor that contributes to successful writing. Active students are bound to build their capabilities of collective thinking consistently. Jim Eison in his article stated, “Active learning instructional strategies include a broad range of activities that share the common element of―involving students in doing things and thinking about the things they are doing” (Eison 1). Active learning includes the amount of personal time an individual devotes to learning and personal effort or energy put into the learning process. To excel in the writing sessions, a student should consider taking down the important points for future reference. Moreover, participating in class debates and contributing during group discussions enhances a student’s oral skills. In their careers, engineers are expected to cohesively and eloquently express themselves during some occurrences. However, many students argue that the writing classes are not necessary because they do not correspond to their career requirements. Nevertheless, this kind of arguments is refutable because for engineering students to excel in their technical programs, they must understand whatever they have covered in class, which is usually in written form. Therefore, writing classes are the foundation that molds successful technical professionals.
Using and utilizing the resources available in the learning institutions is a great attribute for the students who would like to become successful in writing. The following statement verifies this fact “Research indicates that students who utilize these resources report higher levels of satisfaction with the college experience and get more out of the college experience” (Cuseo et al. 2). Most college environments are fully endowed with helpful resources that are either available in print, in person, or in the online platform. However, students should understand that although these resources are at their disposal the extents to which they use them for their sake matters a lot. Particularly by using the academic support, learning centers, and college libraries ensure that students access all the information they need. Also attending academic advisement, career development centers, counseling center, and exploring experiential learning resources are important because they guarantee success in the courses they are undertaking. However, most learners prefer to use the digital platform to work on their projects, and they neglect other materials that could be of great importance. Besides, some students opt to forego the professional counseling and advice sessions incorporated into the curriculum, thus relying on uninformed advice from their peers. Nevertheless, it is wrong to underestimate the importance of the proper use of available resources because classroom sessions do not offer all the information required in the studies. Nevertheless, those students who have accepted multifaceted sources of formation have extensively benefited because the content is wide and from different authors. Therefore, engineering students who are having difficulties in their writing classes can quickly access other original material from other sources and improve their writing
As evident from the above discussion, writing is critical to the engineering programs and other technical courses. In fact, it is a fundamental aspect that significantly contributes to the success of engineering students in college. Engineering students should understand that to excel in both technical and writing sessions; they must collaborate both active learning and use of available resources in their institutions. In essence, writing classes are consistently getting accommodated into the professional courses. Therefore, it is important that students who are undertaking or plan to pursue a technical course should understand that excellent writing skills are applicable in technical courses and consequently will contribute to their success.
