An analysis of letters to the New York Times’ editor reveals just how much loneliness is a campus scourge (“Loneliness and the college”, 2017). A significant fraction of Freshmen reports experiencing difficulties in creating friends, making their college life one of the toughest stages in their lives.
So, now that we know that loneliness is an inadvertent experience in college, let’s look into some of the ways we can make friends on campus.

The first step to make friends on campus is to start talking to someone you wish to befriend.
As emphasized by Underwood (2018), friendship starts when a person is comfortable spouting non-sequiturs.
For example, you can make a conversation about the weather or your view about a particular course you are taking. The idea is to start that conversation and to keep it going. By doing so, the chances of others joining in the chat and making new friends are high.
The second step to make friends after joining college is to get involved on campus.
In this context, “getting involved” means being associated with activities that take place on campus.
Tiffany Onorato, a director of student life at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, recommends that the best advice to forming new friendships is to build your network by getting involved with an on-campus experience (Celletti, 2017). For example, one may choose to join a student club, a platform where one is likely to meet people with whom they share an interest.
The effectiveness of getting involved has been proven in a myriad of literature. For example, in his letter to the editor of the New York Times, Lauretta Charlton argues that joining a music club helped him make new friends after his best friends from college went to other schools in the Bay Area (Underwood, 2018). The positive outcomes of this initiative in prior college encounters imply that we can replicate it to make friends on campus.
The third step in making friends on campus is to take advantage of dorm life.
As observed by Tiffany, “living in a dorm is the only time in your life that you literally are surrounded by hundreds of potential friends in the same peer group” (Celletti, 2017, par.11). Therefore, ensure that you take advantage of that opportunity to spend time with people whom you wish to befriend.
Also, ensure that you are friendly and polite to your roommates. That way, you stand a chance of getting to know them better and developing lasting college relationships.

As you can see, making friends on campus is not a natural thing; sometimes, it can be quite challenging.
Fortunately, we can build friendships by starting conversations, getting involved in campus activities, and taking advantage of dorm life.
