Child Abuse and Associated Policy Issues
Child abuse has been a significant social problem in the United States for decades. Reports by the National Children’s Alliance shows that nearly 700,000 children face child abuse in the country each year (“National Statistics”, n.d.). These statistics are a source of concern, especially considering the widespread initiatives and policies instituted in the country to protect children. Child abuse takes different forms, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, and commercial sexual exploitation. Studies on this social problem have found that social workers can link childhood abuse to adverse health conditions and behavioral pathways such as substance misuse, suicidal behavior, and difficulties in interpersonal and intimate relationships (Taylor, Bradbury-Jones, Lazenbatt & Soliman, 2016). Fortunately, the United States has been making significant steps to help protect children against abuse. The most visible efforts began back in the 1800s following the case of Mary Ellen, a child that suffered abuse under the care of her foster mother. Most notably, Ellen was constantly burnt, beaten, whipped, cut, and locked in a closet by her stepmother, a dreadful situation that lasted for almost seven years (Montanari, 2020). Ellen’s case laid the foundation for developing policies and societies to help protect children against abuse. The first initiative, the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC), was founded in 1874 by citizens to act as a protective agency for American children. To date, the organization offers an array of services to children, families, and communities, including “therapeutic supervised visitation, trauma-focused counseling, school-based child sexual abuse prevention workshops, crisis debriefing for child welfare, best-practice training and advocacy” (“Our work”, n.d.). By 2015, the foundation’s services had impacted about 5,829 children, parents, and caregivers (“Our work”, n.d.). With the required resources at its disposal, NYSPCC is well-positioned to help address child abuse and offer all forms of help, including therapeutic assistance, to victims of this social problem.
